Inpatient Rehab Unit
Joint Township District Memorial Hospital's Inpatient Rehab Facility is a hospital-based unit dedicated to the restoration of the functional mobility and physical independence following an acute medical/surgical hospitalization or episode of decreased function. Located on the 6th floor of the hospital, the IRU is licensed to provide physical orehabilitation services to patients in an acute care setting. Most patients are able to return home with an increased level of independence in less than 14 days.
Quality Care From Quality Professionals
Dr. James Kemmler, Medical Director and Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon leads an inter-disciplinary team of rehabilitation specialists including physical, occupational, and speech therapists, rehab nurses, social worker/case manager and other hospital professionals. Dr. Kemmler and the rehab team work aggressively through an individualized plan of care to insure that each patient achieves his or her maximum potential for functional recovery. The IRU provides a caring, focused and intensive approach to physical rehabilitation with the ultimate goal of increasing mobility and physical independence for activities of daily living.

Patient Referral Processes
Your physician must make a referral to the unit. Patients referred to the Rehabilitation Unit are screened prior to admission to determine medical stability and to evaluate their potential to achieve functional gains from an intensive program that will involve three hours of therapy per day. Patients who meet the IRU criteria my be admitted from St. Marys acute floors, the emergency room, a physician's office or home. If you are a patient in another hospital, you may request to return to St. Marys to complete your rehabilitation program. The average stay in the unit is 14 days and is covered by Medicare and most commercial insurances.
Transition from acute medical/surgical hospitalization to the rehab unit provides an excellent continuity of care with admission planning frequently occuring while the patient is still in the acute phase of their illness or injury. The patient's primary care physician and/or surgeon may also continue to follow and provide care during the IRU stay, further enhancing their recovery, return to home and functional independence.
Once discharged from the IRU, patients may be treated in our newly remodeled rehabilitation center on an outpatient basis by the same professional rehabilitation team. This completes the continuum of patient care from the acute episode through complete recovery.
The addition of the Inpatient Rehab Unit at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital is yet another example of our commitment to provide Quality Care...close to home.
